Garden Design for London Spaces

Studio Kamio is a garden and planting design practice specialising in residential and community spaces in London and other city environments

London gardens, like its inhabitants, are diverse and eclectic spaces. They are a back garden overlooked by neighbours or shaded by trees, a small terrace, perhaps a sun-baked balcony, or a front bed by the bikes and bins. Studio Kamio specialises in designing all of these spaces, taking a naturalistic approach where planting carries the design and hard landscaping tastefully integrates into the existing structures. Every design takes pollinators, year-round habitat, and the wider ecology of the site into account, alongside how the space looks and feels.

Every project begins with two core questions: how do you want to use this space?, and how should this space feel? The design flows from that. As a plant-led garden and planting design studio, we like to introduce hard landscaping in a balanced way, in keeping with a naturalistic, tailored approach to each site.

The result is a green space you genuinely enjoy being in, throughout the seasons.

  • "Manna was brilliant. She gently encouraged me to dare to imagine what my teeny, landing-strip urban garden could be. She was thoughtful, creative and super patient. The garden has gone from overlooked-by-a-carpark to a private, leafy, fragrant oasis. Even my husband and kids notice the upgrade. Pure joy."

ABOUT

Studio Kamio was established by Manna Kamio Badiella, garden designer and gardener. Manna trained in horticulture and garden design at Capel Manor College. A heritage spanning Japan and Spain with interludes in France and Brazil, her mixed background has informed her aesthetic palate, her deep appreciation of craft, and her approach to place and space in ways that are not always immediately apparent.

With her multicultural background and a fifteen year career in the international development sector, Manna has nurtured a love for different cultures, meeting people and hearing their stories, and loves to create gardens that evoke something beyond beauty. In private gardens, this sensibility tends to surface more quietly, informing a design that is genuinely tailored to what matters to the people, and wildlife, living in it.
